R4R Youth Fitness Program
R4R’s Youth Fitness Program was implemented to address childhood obesity in at-risk youth focusing on Title 1 (low income) schools. The YFP educates children and their families about physical fitness and nutrition in the Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties. An additional focus is placed on working with children with physical disabilities and increasing their ability to be physically active.
Since 2010, grants totaling over $400,000 have been awarded to Sacramento regional schools, allowing over 16,000 students to participate in a 5-week after school physical and nutritional training program. Each training session culminates with a 5K “timed” race. Before and after each spring and fall session, pre and post-testing is completed on the student participants. Since the testing was implemented in 2011, 72 percent of the participants experienced an increase in physical fitness.
In September 2011, R4R received the GOLD MEDAL from the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness, as California’s BEST ORGANIZATION. In the fall of 2013, R4R received statewide recognition from the California Milk Processor Board and its “Got Milk” campaign. The board recognized R4R for making a difference in the communities they serve.
